Monolid Eye Shape Correction for Defined, Beautiful Eyes
Monolids are characterized by the absence of a visible eyelid crease. Anatomically, this is due to differences in the connection between the skin and the levator muscle, along with variable fat distribution in the upper lid. While completely normal and beautiful in their own right, some patients feel their monolids make their eyes appear smaller, sleepy, or less symmetrical.
Wanting to create a visible crease for eye definition
Enhancing facial balance or symmetry
Improving how makeup sits on the eyelids
Correcting one-sided monolids or uneven creases
Reducing heaviness or puffiness in the upper lid
Creating a brighter or more expressive gaze
It’s important to recognize that monolid correction is a deeply personal choice. It’s not about losing cultural identity—it’s about refining the features that help you feel confident and seen.
Also called the suture or buried stitch technique, this method involves passing fine sutures under the eyelid skin to create a crease. There is no cutting involved, and the recovery is fast. It is ideal for patients with thin eyelid skin and minimal fat.
Quick recovery (3–5 days for most swelling to resolve)
Minimal bruising or scarring
Reversible if desired
Not ideal for thick or heavy lids
Crease may fade over time, especially with eye rubbing or natural aging
Not effective if significant asymmetry or drooping exists
This method involves a small incision along the upper eyelid crease. Through this, excess fat, muscle, or skin can be removed and the desired crease is created with meticulous suture placement. It is ideal for patients with thicker eyelids, excess skin, or more dramatic reshaping needs.
Long-lasting or permanent results
Ability to address multiple layers (fat, skin, muscle)
Excellent for asymmetry correction or revision cases
Requires a longer healing period (2–3 weeks for initial swelling, full refinement in 3–6 months)
Slightly higher risk of scarring—but scars are typically hidden in the crease when performed by an expert
This hybrid option combines elements of both the suture and incision methods. A small incision is made to allow minimal tissue removal while keeping most of the skin intact.
Less invasive than full incision
Good for moderate eyelid thickness or fat
Balanced healing timeline
Not suitable for all skin types
May still require touch-up if the eyelid is very active or heavy
The epicanthal fold is a small skin web that covers the inner corner of the eye. For some, it makes the eyes appear more closed or shorter horizontally. Epicanthoplasty gently opens this area, creating a longer and more elegant eye shape.
When combined with double eyelid surgery, it can enhance overall symmetry and width without looking artificial.
Ptosis, or eyelid drooping, is often subtle but can make one or both eyes appear lower or tired. In these cases, lifting the muscle that raises the eyelid (levator) can brighten the gaze and match the crease height more effectively.
This is often done simultaneously during double eyelid procedures for a smoother, more balanced result.
Before committing to surgery, many individuals experiment with eyelid tape or glue to simulate a double eyelid fold. These products can offer a glimpse into how a crease might change the eye’s appearance.
Great for visualizing results
Temporary and adjustable
Not sustainable long-term
May irritate the skin or cause sagging with prolonged use
No functional improvement (does not resolve drooping or puffiness)
Not everyone seeking monolid correction needs surgery. Ideal candidates include:
Individuals with realistic expectations
Healthy adults with stable vision and no severe eye conditions
Those with persistent asymmetry or eyelid heaviness
People who’ve used non-surgical methods but want a permanent change
Patients with monolids that affect their expression, makeup, or self-perception
Healing varies depending on the chosen method, but general timelines include:
